DC Soap Opera
The good news is that at the last minute a government shutdown was averted before midnight last Saturday. The bad news is that it’s good only for 45 days (right before Thanksgiving), when the process is likely to repeat itself, most likely with a new deadline right before the year-end holidays.
The other bad news is that far-right GOP House members engineered the ouster of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, there is currently no Speaker so nothing can be done, and it’s unclear when there will be and who it will be. Meanwhile the clock is ticking on the budget issue and all the other business before Congress (including our priorities) which remains at a standstill.
